Time for another Dram!
A Romanian Single Malt Whisky with an exciting aroma and a lot of flavour.
This was bottle nr. 326 (of 428 bottles) from Cask No 3867, bottled in 2022.
As you can probably tell I love whisky and since Feteasca Neagra is one of my favourite Romanian wines I was beyond curious about this particular one.
A bit about
Allan Anderson is the Master Distiller behind this Single Malt, product of Alexandrion Group, which is distilled, matured and bottled in Romania.
Matured initially in a first-fill ex-bourbon American oak cask, then in an ex-wine (Feteasca Neagra) European oak cask, this interesting whisky has a natural colour and is non-chill filtered.
This Carpathian Single Malt Feteasca Neagra Cask Finish is part of the Romanian Wine Cask Collection which also includes a Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and a Pinot Noir Cask Finish.
Time to try it
Carpathian Single Malt, Feteasca Neagra Cask Finish
Nose: Powerful, beautifully sweet, with cloves, ripe cherries and boiled sweets/candy. The wine cask finish is easily recognizable. Overall, it has a complex and interesting aroma, different from most other single malts I've recently tried.
Taste: Vanilla, raisins, quite sweet and a bit sharp on the tongue and palate with the first sip, but mellows down soon after.
Finish: Medium, warm and sweet at first, slightly bitter with some tannins towards the end
It has a beautiful aroma which reminds me somehow of traditional Romanian plum spirit ( I might be just imagining it, or it might be wishful thinking, who knows).
Pros and cons
If served neat, you can feel the 46% ABV, but a few drops of cold water or even an ice cube or two open up more of the aromas and temper the slightly high alcohol percentage.
Priced around £60-70 on most UK websites, this Carpathian Single Malt is a highly interesting dram to try.

In conclusion
If you're a fan of complex, medium-bodied whiskies, you won't regret trying this one.
I would love to try all the whiskies from the Romanian Wine Cask Collection as this one has been better than I could have anticipated.
I am very much looking forward to also trying their Spanish and Portuguese, Greek and Cypriot, French and Italian Wine Collections and I might even be curious enough to try the Peated Collection.
