Time for another dram!
Glen Marnoch
A Non-Age-Statement Highland Single Malt produced for Aldi Stores.
A bit about!
Matured in hand-crafted white oak casks, it has 40% ABV and an interesting tawny colour.
Glen Marnoch is a made-up name for Aldi's whisky range. The whisky is distilled, matured and bottled in Scotland, but at which specific distilleries, I have not yet found out.
It won Silver at the International Spirits Challenge in 2023, which, I have to admit, was a bit surprising for me.
Time to try it!
Nose: Very light notes of dried fruit and oak
Taste: Verging on sweet, with some more dried fruit and oak
Finish: Medium, still slightly sweet, with even more oakiness.
Pros and cons
I have to admit that I was a bit biased before trying it and expected it to be a bit harsher on the palate because of the No-Age-Statement and lack of information about the brand/distillery/distillation process. It has fortunately exceeded my biased expectations and I found it to be quite palatable.
Neat is okay, but adding a few drops of cold water brings out a couple more layers of delicate malty aromas and flavours.
In Conclusion
Priced at around £18 in Aldi stores, it's quite good in cocktails, it's palatable neat, but, for me, it lacks any depth. Considering its price, if you're curious, it's worth a try, but I wouldn't keep my hopes too high.
