Penderyn Peated - Whisky

A lightly peated Single Malt Welsh Whisky

Penderyn Peated - Whisky

A bit about

After trying the Penderyn Celt, I wasn't sure what to expect from this one. Compared to Celt, I found this one to be more delicate and milder in peat.

Penderyn Peated has won quite a few awards so far: Gold (Outstanding) in 2018 at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, Double Gold in 2020 at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Gold at the World Whisky Masters - The Spirits Business in 2020, 2021 and 2023.

Penderyn Peated has 46%c ABV and a delicate light-golden colour.

Time to try it

Nose: slightly sweeter and less peated than expected

Taste: Same impression from the nose continues on the palate with the first sip, a hint of vanilla with green apple slice and lime zest to accompany. As with the Sherrywood cask, the first bit of the sip is quite sweet followed by crispy and citrusy tones

Finish: medium, with more vanilla

Pros and Cons

I would describe this as 'barely peated' and don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining at all about that in any way,

For someone who isn't necessarily a fan of peated whiskies, this one has just the right amount to be subtly peated, intriguing, but not too powerful.

I have only tried my small bottle neat, and it went down way quicker than expected. It's very easy to drink and smooth on the palate.

In Conclusion

Priced at around £40 on most UK websites, I think it's a great whisky to sample, especially if you're curious about peated whiskies but not yet sure if you want to dive deep in the smoke.

If you want a slightly sweeter and more peated version, you might want to try the Penderyn Celt. If, on the other hand, you prefer very peated ones, then the Lagavulin or Ledaig 10 might be better suited for you.
